Casper aged 10
10 months with RESTART leading to engagement during Covid isolation
Previously home schooled due to school exclusion Serious anxiety around education and teachers Struggled with weight management
100% attendance over 10-month period
Initial Barriers
Casper, a 10-year-old living in a children's home, faced significant challenges during lockdown. With a history of school exclusion and home schooling, he had developed serious anxiety around education and teachers. The children's home management sought educational support to help engage him during this isolated period.
Building Trust
Our approach centered on involving Casper in designing his own curriculum. By allowing him to work at his own pace and have input into his learning content, we gradually broke down his barriers to education. This collaborative approach helped establish trust and created a positive learning environment.
Successful Engagement
Casper achieved remarkable progress, maintaining 100% attendance over ten months. He engaged successfully in numeracy, literacy, and particularly enjoyed creative writing, using IT equipment to record his work. When restrictions eased, we introduced outdoor sports activities, addressing his weight management concerns and promoting a healthier lifestyle. His journey demonstrates how personalised, patient support can transform a young person's relationship with education.

"We were amazed that Casper was able to go out to the shops to choose and buy nutritional food and cook it with Stella" Children’s home staff

Ethan aged 16
5 months with RESTART leading to college
Personal behaviour management
Excluded for 3 months with non-attendance
Poor personal life choices
Excluded
Ethan had been excluded from most mainstream and Short Stay Schools in his local area and hadn’t been in education for 3 months before joining RESTART. He slept late & spent all day playing computer games until going to meet his friends after the school day ended.
Bespoke plan
When we met with Ethan and his father, it was clear that Ethan was very capable of getting up and engaging in an educational program. We tailored his RESTART programme around his requirements, having discussions on current affairs, behaviour and life plans. His favourite activity in his bespoke plan was sports.
Progression
Ethan's dad felt our involvement invaluable. Ethan’s relationships with family improved and he has matured. Previously, his language choices were often inappropriate. However, with continual prompting, his bad language has reduced and public behaviour is significantly better. His attitude in academic work also improved, particularly in Math's. He completed all work set and achieved a place at College

"Ethan passed his math's and vocational training. Thank you so much for your help. Not sure he would have worked so hard without your help. You’ve been ace." Dad

Simon aged 15
Full academic year with RESTART leading to offer of place at school
Simon was virtually reclusive in his bedroom totally disengaged from mainstream education for 3 years.
Struggled with social interaction Physical health issues (hypermobility, back and knee pains)
Disengaged and isolated
Simon, 15, had been disengaged from mainstream education for three years. During lockdown, he became reclusive, prompting his mother to seek help. Our goal was to engage Simon with a trusted adult and reintegrate him into social surroundings.
Building Confidence
Through one-to-one mentoring, we slowly built Simon's trust and confidence. He achieved his entry level qualification in math's and began attending a health club, showing maximum effort in practical lessons. Simon's communication skills improved dramatically, progressing from being confined to his bedroom to willingly participating in activities and engaging in conversations in new environments and peers.
Personal Growth and Future Prospects
Simon discovered a passion for practical, hands-on activities, which improved his well being and alleviated physical issues. He became more organised, independent, and confident in facing new challenges. As of our last interaction, Simon was awaiting confirmation for a Level 1 Joinery course, representing a significant step towards a positive future and demonstrating the transformative power of personalised support.

“We had run out of options with Simon. He wasn’t able to interact with peers. Restart was able to regain his trust with adults and education”
